Folder with 25 original etchings, each of them is shown below.
If Valle-Inclán's grotesque needed more illustrations than his own words, he would find his best correlation in the paintings of Gutiérrez Solana. Priests, saints, morons, whores with their pimps, skulls and dark and burlesque masks. A macabre carnival, a deranged procession, fruit and reflection of the decadent Spain of the early 20th century.
Perhaps for this reason, the work of José Gutiérrez Solana (1886 -1945) is considered the plastic reservoir of the literary legacy of the Generation of '98. So much so, that the painter was also a writer, friend and regular at the Madrid Café Levante de authors such as Azorín, Pío Baroja or Ramón María del Valle-Inclán himself.
