José Gutiérrez Solana was a prominent Spanish engraver of the 20th century. His engraving technique focused on etching and drypoint. He used metal plates, usually copper, on which he engraved his images with a needle or burin, and then immersed them in acid to corrode the lines. This technique allowed for the creation of detailed, dark engravings, which fit well with his realistic and often somber style. Gutiérrez Solana was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere and psychology of his subjects in his prints, which made him stand out in the field of Spanish printmaking.
